For me:
As an independent digital video producer I slowly accumulated (through mentorship
of computer geeks who were kind to me) knowledge in many different software
applications. I was able to edit, author dvds, generate print media and promote
my work on the web without constantly begging or paying for these tasks from
others.
I have come along many non-profits, actors, entrepreneurs and filmmakers who
are breaking the bank trying while trying to get exposure for themselves because
they are at the mercy of outsourcing.
I would therefore rather teach people to fish than charge them for a slightly
different one over and over again.
For you:
If you have the software on your home computer, you
can run a cottage industry of your own! Need to update your reel, website,
postcard? Now you don't have to wait or pay someone for a few simple changes.
You also have more creative control over refining your work at your leisure
and without thought to "how much extra would that be?"
•It's empowering (and easier on your wallet)
to do for yourself what professionals would charge you an arm and a leg for.
•Not relying on outside help allows for more flexibility as to when
you work on and complete your projects.
•It's another skill to put on your resumé.
•Learning bolsters self-esteem and develops aptitude towards learning
and experimenting with new subjects.
